The evolution of a seigneurie
Since the first trip of Samiel de Champlain at Saint-Ours, the destiny of the future seigneurie was setting. It is only sixty years later, in 1668, that Pierre de Saint-Ours, officer of the Carignan-Salières regiment, receives the territory that extends from the south shore of the Saint-Lawrence up to the river Yamaska. In 1703, the first mill is built to the great joy of the first censitaires, which are mainly soldiers of the officer that is now a lord.
In 1849, Saint-Ours Canal is inaugurated, in the series of constructions and projects to build a dam and a lock on the Richelieu river, which will allow the construction of a water mill designed to produce flour and carded wool. Thanks to the locks, boats can finally go through the last obstacle on the way from Montreal to New York. The Canal will be essential for international, regional and local commerce for more than a century. Witness of the evolution of the Seigneurie, the shores of the Richelieu have many stories to tell!
