Archaeological research often looks like the game Snakes and Ladders: sometimes, you move forward very easily and, sometimes, you have to go back to where you started. Sometimes, archaeological curators must work in a similar context, especially when they try to restore an object whose use is a mystery. The paths they take are winding and obscure, and sometimes lead nowhere! With the help of a few examples, you will learn about a little-known facet of archaeology, where scientific analysis, observation, curiosity and, sometimes luck, play an important role.
